What is Ba'Bayit?
What: Inspired by the desire to connect our children to those of our Jewish neighbors – to create Jewish community in our neighborhoods, and to be sensitive to your demanding lives – Temple Judea is excited to announce a brand-new alternative to traditional Religious School with a program that brings our full curriculum (taught by our best teachers), right into your home: Ba’Bayit (literally – “in the home”).
Why: The Jewish people have survived extraordinary challenges, but what generation has faced Los Angeles traffic and crowded calendars as we do today? Also, we understand that our synagogue can feel large, and it can be challenging to connect. The goal of this program is to help you create a smaller Jewish community within our Temple Judea community: blending learning, celebrating and sharing Jewish life together with your neighbors and our clergy, together with convenience. Ba’Bayit gives families, whose schedules don’t necessarily fit the weekday or weekend times of Religious School, the opportunity to bring the program home – together with friends, old and new; bringing together children from your neighborhood, on a day, at a time, and in a place that works better for them.
Is this program replacing “Regular Religious School”?: Ba’Bayit is an alternative to and not a replacement of our regular Religious School schedule. Not only does the regularly scheduled in-class program continue, but Ba’Bayit participants are encouraged to participate in any or all of our community activities throughout the year; such as: Shabbat dinners and services, grade level family programs, art, Pop-Up Choir, the JCIT (Junior Cantors in Training) program, Mitzvah Day, and more. In addition, we hope families in the program will join together for Shabbat dinners, Havdalah and holiday celebrations.
Who: All children in a group must be in the same grade in secular school. A minimum of four students is required to make up a “home group”. All participating families must belong to Temple Judea*.
Where: The program will take place at a home in your neighborhood. It could even be yours!
When: Ba’Bayit will take place at a time mutually convenient for the families and the teacher involved (it can be any time but Tuesday afternoon or Sunday morning).
How many sessions and how long is each one?: Each “home group” K-6, will have 25 sessions.
- For students in K-3, each session will be one hour in length.
- For students in 4-6, classes will be an hour and a half (45 minutes of Hebrew and prayer and 45 minutes of Judaica).
Tuition: Because this is a new, experimental program, during the coming 2019-20 academic year the costs will be:
- K – 3rd grade: Tuition $700 for the year
- 4th – 6th grade: Tuition $1050 for the year

Bring a Friend Incentive: Any current (18/19 year)Temple Judea member who refers a NEW family to TJ for the 19/20 year, will receive a discount of $200 off (the referring member’s) tuition for every child the new family enrolls in Religious School. The discount will be reflected on the account of the referring family in the Spring 2020.
